Leave of Absence Policy

Did you know that you can take a PAID leave-of-absence (LOA) while you are registered at the University of Toronto? If not, keep on reading!

You can take a leave-of-absence or LOA for two reasons:


HEALTH/PERSONAL PROBLEMS

CONSIDERATIONS:

  • Time to yourself to address personal or health problems

  • Not required to pay tuition and incidental fees; Stipend is not being paid during this time

  • Funds up to $5,000 per student for one term on a one-time only basis available

  • Termination date of degree program will be extended by duration of leave

  • You will not be registered as a student (for UHIP coverage for international students, please see below)

  • You will not be able to access UofT resources (sports facilities/library services/etc.)

  • You can only apply at the start/end of a session

PROCESS:
Download and fill out all of these form and submit them to the department for approval:

  • Stipend form, signed by grad coordinators

  • Physicians note

  • LOA form, only section 1+2, signed by grad coordinator/chair

  • One page letter with explanation for reason (addressed to the LOA Stipendiary Fund Committee)


PARENTAL LEAVE

You can apply for a parental leave:

  • At pregnancy, birth or adoption of a child

    • Up to 12 months from date of birth/custody

  • As either parent

    • if both parents are grad students, the combined leave cannot be more than 4 sessions

FINANCIAL AID (for doctoral students ONLY):

  •  $5,833 per session
