First Year Representative By-Election

2023-2024

Moh Ishraq

Hi I’m Moh, and I’m campaigning to be a first year representative! I had a lot of fun organizing workshops and events as a peer mentor during undergrad, and I would love to take part in organizing and participating in more events during my graduate school years. I look forward to fostering a vibrant community in MBP, with my peers, through a variety of events!

KJ Woudsma

I feel strongly about advocating for the concerns and interests of first year students within MBP, ensuring that our voices are heard and that our experiences and perspectives are taken into consideration in the decisions affecting our futures. Also social stuff is fun!

Christy Wong

Hi! I'm Christy, and I’m thrilled to be running for your first-year representative. Upon entering MBP, I've been genuinely inspired by the shared passion and dedication to research surrounding me. During undergrad, I had the privilege of leading the student biophysics organization. This role allowed me to support my peers academically and contribute to departmental improvements and I plan to transfer those efforts to our class. As first year representative, I will be committed to fostering the strong sense of camaraderie and collaboration already blooming in our class by organizing inclusive events and providing supportive resources when needed. Although sometimes scary, first year is a critical point of our academic journeys, and I want to help make it as smooth and rewarding as possible. I will always value feedback and suggestions and am dedicated to improving our collective experiences. Can’t wait to work with you all! Vote for Christy!

As the position entitles, first year rep need to be the “go-to” person for entering graduate students. I believe that with my past experiences as a site rep for my MSc program and a program coordinator for a volunteering organization, I am well-suited for this role where the key responsibilities include understanding interests and concerns of first-year students and coordinating initiatives with the rest of the MBPGSA committees. I believe that I will be able to accurately relay feedback from first-year students to the association with my experience as a liaison between community organizations and student-led clubs as well as hospitals for a medical device company. By nature, I enjoy listening to various opinions towards a specific matter and love interacting with fellow colleagues and associated staff members. And so ultimately, I would love to be a part of the MBPGSA to bring exciting events and gatherings!

Lucas Penny

Hello fellow MBP first-years! I'm Lucas Penny, a computational biology student diving into the world of early cancer biomarkers. Some of my passions include biotechnology, accessible healthcare, and outdoor sports.

As First Year Rep, I hope to grow our student community through events and socials. My days of varsity rowing didn't just teach me how to paddle—it instilled in me discipline for time management. With leadership experience from spearheading a national HIV self-testing study to serving as a VP for outreach in student clubs at UofT during undegrad, I've got the skills to make our first year vibrant and interconnected.

I want a year with memorable events and building a supportive community that thrives together. Vote for me and let's make our first year in MBP unforgettable! 🚀🔬🌍
