Job Summary

To assist in managing the overall operation, maintenance, and safety of the Device Development Laboratory (DDL) under the supervision of the DDL Director and DDL Manager.

This post is for a 1 year term.

Job Responsibilities

  • Oversee the operation of the Device Development Lab (DDL), which includes Cleanroom, Microfabrication equipment (Dicing saws, Lapping & Polishing machine, Laser system, Sputtering machine, Mask aligner, Parylene coater, Wire-bonders), Catheter fabrication equipment, circuit testing stations, and microscopes
  • Conduct equipment maintenance, repair, and calibration in the DDL as needed
  • Manage user access and charges: track group & equipment usage for membership fees for cost recovery and purchase DDL consumables
  • Maintain and promote a safe, clean, and efficient working environment at DDL
  • Develop and/or update site-specific equipment manuals and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Supervise the activities of DDL users during equipment use. Provide appropriate training and mentorship to help complete their projects when necessary
  • Work effectively with other staff at all levels across different teams (e.g. scientists, engineers, machinists, admin staff, students, building services)
  • Collaborate with research groups to develop process/fabrication/measurement solutions as required
  • Support research/service activity from external universities and companies

Required Skills

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering (e.g. biomedical, electrical, mechanical, systems) or equivalent.
  • Knowledge in one of the following areas: acoustics, ultrasound transducer technology, MRI, analog and digital circuits, mechanical design and medical device design
  • Ability to learn how to use new machining tools and equipment quickly
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to multitask
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with scientists, technologists, students, collaborators, and industry representatives
  • Ability to read and understand technical drawings and procedures and relate them to Health and Safety regulations when necessary

Preferred Skills

  • Experience working in the Cleanroom with microfabrication equipment, including electronic test equipment
  • Experience using MS Office, 2D CAD (e.g. AutoCAD), 3D CAD (e.g. SolidWorks), and circuit design software
